Veterans Education and Transition Services (V.E.T.S.) Initiatives Date Posted: Wed, 27 Aug 2008

Veterans Education & Transition Services (V.E.T.S.) Initiatives Institutions of higher education are only beginning to see increased enrollment of those veterans returning from the Middle East. This number is expected to spike in the coming years and it is time now to prepare for influx. The University of Arizona’s Division of Student Affairs is pleased to announce the launching of V.E.T.S. (Veterans Education and Transition Services). V.E.T.S. is series of integrated campus initiatives to support the complex transition of veterans to the U of A. The V.E.T.S. Office is a student veteran-run facility that will offer information, referrals, and programming. We hope that this space will service as a “one-stop-shop” for veterans on campus. The office is located in Old Main 208 C. Please contact VETSofc@email.arizona.edu for more information.

The Disability Resource Center and the Department of Rehabilitation Studies are beginning a congressionally funded research project entitled: Veterans’ Reintegration and Education Project. This study will employ participatory action research to empower vets to identify the barriers, issues or opportunities they encounter related to higher education. The ultimate goal of the research is to have data inform the programs and services put in place to aid in the success of student veterans on campus. Staff is looking to speak with veterans, student veterans, and other constituent groups. To become involved or learn more about the study please contact: Program Coordinator, Amanda Kraus: akraus@email.arizona.edu.

The University Teaching Center is enrolling students in S.E.R.V. (Supportive Education for the Returning Veteran) courses. This three course curriculum is designed specifically for student veterans and focuses on hardiness, resiliency, and leadership. For more information please visit: http://www.utc.arizona.edu/serv/.

To celebrate student veterans and V.E.T.S. initiatives, an event will take place on October 9th. UA President Robert Shelton and Congressman Raul Grijalva will be in attendance.

The experience of student veterans is multifaceted and complex. We would like the V.E.T.S. initiatives to support all members of the campus community, including faculty, staff, as they work with student vets on campus. Please contact the V.E.T.S. Office with any questions or requests for information at VETSofc@email.arizona.edu.
